Petzl Recall on GRIGRI 2

Concerns all GRIGRI 2's (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136.

GRIGRI2 Recall
Petzl has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2 can cause internal damage, such that the GRIGRI 2 handle may become stuck in the open position, as pictured in Figure 1.

When the handle is stuck in the position shown in Figure 1, the assisted braking function is disabled. A damaged GRIGRI 2 in this configuration will function similarly to a manual belay device (e.g. tube-style device).
When using a damaged GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the open position, failure to control the braking side of the rope will dramatically increase the risk of an uncontrolled descent, possibly resulting in injury or death.

A GRIGRI 2 with a damaged handle must be immediately retired from service.

Please note that failure to control the braking side of the rope is a misuse of the GRIGRI 2 under any circumstance (See the GRIGRI 2 Technical Notice - pdf file, 2.5Mo).

As of June 20, 2011, seven damaged GRIGRI 2 units have been returned to Petzl through our worldwide distribution network. Petzl has no knowledge of any accidents resulting from a damaged GRIGRI 2 handle.

Petzl Response
Because the safety of our users is our primary concern, as a precautionary measure Petzl has decided to take the following actions:

  • Ask users to immediately stop using all GRIGRI 2's with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136.
  • Recall all affected GRIGRI 2's and replace with new, revised versions.
  • Petzl will pay for all shipping costs to complete this replacement.
  • Increase the mechanical strength of the handle on all GRIGRI 2's from serial number 11137 onward.
  • Begin shipping replacement GRIGRI 2's immediately. Users will receive replacements in the same order they return their old units to Petzl.

Every one of us here at Petzl is committed to resolving this issue as quickly and efficiently as possible. Thank you for your coopoeration and support.

If you have a GRIGRI 2 (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, stop use immediately and contact Petzl America to initiate an exchange.

Contact Petzl America in one of two ways:

DMM International Recall on the Dragon Camming Device in size 4 and 5

[On February 15, 2011] DMM received information from a U.S retailer regarding size 5 (Blue) Dragon Cams. They have found cracks on the aluminium axle boss on 2 of the Dragon Cam size 5s they have in stock. This boss is a turned part similar to the original Dragon 6 that [DMM] recalled on the 22nd July 2010.

For the safety of all of [DMM] customers [DMM is] issuing an immediate recall for all Dragon Cams size 4 and 5 with turned axle bosses . At present there is no evidence that suggests the size 4 Dragon Cams are affected. However, [DMM] feel it appropriate to include them in the recall due to similarities in construction.

What you should do
If in possession of a cam [see photos here], please discontinue use immediately and follow the steps below:
1. Print out this form.
2. Fill in the form.
3. Both the form and the Dragon Cams need to be sent together to [DMM] at the DMM address on the form. There are 3 ways of doing this:

  • Directly to [DMM];
  • back to the retailer where the Dragon cam was purchased;
  • or to your national distributor

If you are a retailer or distributor, please quarantine all affected stock immediately and follow your standard returns procedure.

What [DMM] will do

  • [DMM] promise to deal with the situation as quickly and efficiently as we can.
  • All units will be reassembled with a new hot forged aluminium axle boss and returned to you.

[DMM's] first and foremost priority is the safety of the climbing community. [DMM] apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continued understanding and support.

More information will follow after further investigation.

DMM International Recall on the Dragon Camming Device in size 6

DMM International has identified a raw material problem that may affect the strength of certain units of the Dragon Cam in size 6 (Product Code A7056A).

This recall only involves the Dragon Cam in size 6 and no other sizes of Dragon Cam are involved. The problem originates from a structural defect in a raw material that is uniquely used to make a single component on the size 6 Dragon.

The raw material involved is used to make the aluminium axle boss on the Dragon Cam in size 6. DMM International has discovered that
the components made out of this defective material can develop cracks and that these cracks can grow and propagate with time. This could cause the units to fail below their rated strength.
