Escape the Belay/Partner Rescue -- Indoor to Outdoor Sport Lead -- Belay Systems & Anchor Management

Escape the Belay/Partner Rescue
Ok, so things have gone bad and you have a lead climber hanging unconscious 150 feet above your belay and you need to do something right now. This scenario is used to outline the process of escaping the belay and then options for rescuing your stranded partner — a must know for all serious climbers.

The clinic begins with a hands-on lesson in advanced knots and processes on how to escape the belay and how to transfer the load to the anchor. We then examine, in a discussion format, what to do to initiate the rescue. These concepts are the basis for most rescue situations. At the end of the clinic, you will receive an outline for future reference.

Indoor to Outdoor Sport Lead - Making the Transition
This clinic provides tips and information to know before you take your indoor lead climbing skills to the outdoors. We discuss ethics, environmental concerns and common courtesies as they relate to the crag. Topics include the “first ascent principle”, leave no trace, the tradition of climbers self policing their own resource, and other related issues. Also included are hard skills such as Rope Transfer, optional methods for establishing a top-rope anchor upon completing the lead and Third Rope Retreat. Third Rope Retreat is an important skill which allows you to bail from a route while retrieving all your gear. Tips and tricks are taught to make life a little easier when sport leading. Lastly, we examine the topic of guidebook interpretation and what all the symbols mean. You will receive Pat Mackin’s “ultimate topo” as well as an outline of the clinic for future reference.
